It was a 5 hour drive from Nairobi to Masai Mara. I was only there for 3 days and the goal was to capture photographs most visitors can’t. In order to do that I had to be very lucky and we might have to bend a few rules. During my stay the guides kept chatting about this young lion, Golden Boy, but at the end of the three days we had yet to see a male lion. As we were driving towards the gate, as if by divine intervention, my guide got a call from one of his friends and turned to me and asked me if I wanted to see the Golden Boy himself. We ran into him as he was sunbathing on a hilltop. I daringly asked my guide, if the rules could be bent a little bit. I got my cameras ready, and we went slightly off road. Now parked adjacent to him, I slowly popped out of the window to get the perfect low angle shot. As soon as I did that, he turned his eyes towards me. I raised my head and looked into his eyes. Surreal! Majestic! I later learned more about this lion. His name is Olobor, which means ‘the calm one’. He is anything but not calm. He is beautiful and violent and calm in demeanor, and I love that about him!
